Following on from our post about the Best Long-distance trails in the UK, we wanted to focus in on some more lesser-known trails in Scotland. These trails are still very popular, but don’t receive the amount of coverage that the likes of the West Highland Way or Great Glen way do.

Scotland is vast – to say the least. With 70% of the population living in the “Central Belt” of the country, which includes the major cities Glasgow and Edinburgh, this means there is a lot of open space – great news for hikers! And better yet, these open spaces are filled with incredible landscapes, high mountains and lush forests.

Like with all of our list articles, these are subject to the popularity on HiiKER. We know there are hundreds more spectacular trails in Scotland (and we hope to cover them all). But let’s start with the Ten most popular on HiiKER.

Cape Wrath Trail West

Dubbed as the UK’s toughest long-distance trail, this 230-mile route takes you through some of the most wild and spectacular landscapes in Scotland. The trail is quite remote in many places, so good navigation skills and extra packing for sections of this is absolutely necessary.

Skye Trail

The unmistakable landscape of the Isle of Skye
The unmistakable landscape of the Isle of Skye

Journey across the Isle of Skye on this 80-mile trail that reveals a panorama of jagged peaks, secluded bays, and dramatic cliffs. Movie-buffs will recognise this spectacular landscape from movies like “Prometheus”, “47 Ronin” and of course, “Highlander”.
The challenge lies in the lack of waymarking, but downloading your map for offline use and even making a printed version as a back-up, will help keep you on-track. Also, the stunning vistas of the Cuillin Mountains and the Quiraing make it worth the effort.

Not as well-known as its westerly sibling, the East Highland way packs just as much awe-inspiring views. Marvel at the picturesque views of Loch Laggan, explore the quaint villages, and enjoy the diverse wildlife of the Cairngorms National Park.

This 147-mile coastal path offers a rugged, adventurous hike from Inverness to John O’Groats. Along the way, you’ll encounter ancient castles, deep glens, towering cliffs, and vast sandy beaches, all while enjoying views of the wild North Sea. The recommended route for this is to start in Inverness and walk to the most North-westerly point in Scotland (and the UK). This trail is also well known as the final stage of the Land’s End to John O’Groats route, which has grown in popularity in the UK over the past few years.
