The Great Navigation Debate: Traditional map & compass vs. HiiKER app vs. a blended approach

In the age of technology, when almost everything we do is aided by some form of electronic device, the debate around navigation while hiking is heating up. Should we stick to the tried-and-true method of using a map and compass, go fully digital with apps like HiiKER, or find a middle ground?

Of course, we have a biassed view on this. However, as passionate hikers and advocates for good navigational skills, we truly believe in preserving the experience of map and navigation skills and bringing it to the digital age.

What do you think? Have a read of both sides of the argument and let us know in the comments below?

The Timeless Compass and Map:

  1. Reliability: A compass and a map don’t require batteries or signal. They’ll work in places where your phone or GPS device won’t get reception. While free offline maps with HiiKER is a huge benefit, you should never 100% rely on your phone.
  2. Skill Development: Navigating with these tools requires knowledge and practice. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of the terrain, routes, and your surroundings.
  3. Safety: In an emergency situation, especially in remote areas where electronics might fail, a map and compass could be your lifesaver.
  4. Tangible Experience: There’s something rewarding about plotting your own route, measuring distances with your fingers, and using the compass to find your way.

The Digital Age with HiiKER:

  1. Up-to-Date Information: HiiKER provides real-time updates on trails, weather conditions, and even potential hazards.
  2. User-Friendly: For the tech-savvy hiker, HiiKER can be more intuitive. Plus, you can easily zoom in and out and switch between views.
  3. Multi-Functional: Apart from navigation, HiiKER can track your progress, log your hikes, and even provide details about nearby points of interest. One of the least-known aspects of HiiKER is the ability to find the perfect bar, cafe or store to restock on food and supplies for your hike.
  4. Community Insights: Benefit from the experiences of other hikers. HiiKER allow users to leave comments or notes about trail conditions, which can be invaluable. Researching reviews on trails can be hugely beneficial when considering what to expect.
  5. Multiple premium topo maps: In many of the popular hiking destinations, there are so many maps to choose from and in many cases, you will need multiple paper maps to hike your desired route. With HiiKER, you have the ability to blend multiple map layers and never have to unfold (or refold) your paper map. (Below shows three areas of Wicklow National park on three maps – all accessible within seconds).

Best of Both Worlds: Blending Traditional and Tech:

  1. Backup Plan: Using HiiKER in conjunction with a compass and map ensures you always have a backup. If one method fails, you have the other to rely on.
  2. Skill Refinement: While HiiKER can make navigation simpler, it’s still crucial to understand the basics. Using both methods allows you to practice traditional navigation while enjoying the conveniences of technology.
  3. Enhanced Safety: Two methods are better than one, especially in an emergency. Even if your device loses power or there’s no signal, you have your trusty map and compass to guide you.
  4. Flexible Journey: Sometimes, you might want to plan your route in detail using HiiKER, then execute it using your compass and map. It provides flexibility in how you want your hiking experience to be and keeps your navigation skills in-check.

While purists might argue for the compass and map, and tech enthusiasts might lean towards apps like HiiKER, there’s no right or wrong choice. It’s all about personal preference and the specific demands of your journey. However, the blended approach arguably offers the most comprehensive and safe method, ensuring you’re prepared for whatever the trail throws at you.
